“Nachhall” blends composed and improvised music. The four musicians come from different musical backgrounds – jazz, classical and contemporary music – and infuse their music with these influences. This has given rise to a musical identity all of its own. They met whilst studying in Lucerne, through cross-genre projects. They quickly recognised their shared musical preferences and interests. In the spring of 2017, they realised their first joint project in collaboration with the contemporary composer Michael Surber. His miniature compositions were incorporated into the improvisation in the moment. Composition and improvisation were interwoven, so that the distinction between written and improvised music was no longer clearly discernible to the listener.

 

The four musicians compose their own material for their new project. To further develop their shared musical identity, they work on small fragments of composition, which are collaboratively developed, altered and refined, only to be ultimately transformed and fused together through improvisation.

The ensemble developed and performed a 24-hour improvisation marathon as part of the Albert Koechlin Stiftung’s ‘Die Andere Zeit’ Festival in 2019.
